Early intervention and detection of vision impairments is essential to you child’s growth and development. We are very proud to partner with Diopsys and offer Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) screening to detect potential problems in your child.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology estimates that two to three percent of Americans have Amblyopia, a potentially eye damaging disease. Since Amblyopia is not treatable in adults, it is critical that children be tested as early as six months to detect abnormalities.
Amblyopia is poor vision in an otherwise normal appearing eye, which occurs when the brain does not recognize the sight from that eye. Two common causes are strabismus (misaligned eye) and a difference in the refractive error (need for glasses) between the two eyes. If untreated, Amblyopia can cause irreversible visual loss. The best time for treatment is in the preschool years.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus recommend timely screening for early detection and treatment of eye and vision problems in American children.
As your healthcare professional, you have entrusted us with your child’s health. We highly recommend and support early screening for Amblyopia.
The testing is covered by most healthcare providers. The cost of the test in our office is around $200. Please be aware that you would be responsible for any part of the cost that your insurance does not cover. If you have questions regarding this testing, please ask. It is our goal to have no child left behind and eliminate vision deficits.
